If you think that “The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture” can only exist in a fictional anime like Genshiken, you’re so very wrong.
I believe most of you should know by now, school has already begun for most of us. For me, it’s a new chapter in my life as I’ve completed my Secondary education and am now studying in National Junior College. Contrary to Secondary schools, it’s not compulsory to take up a co-curricular activity (CCA) in JC. However, life can be extremely boring without one as you will just mug every single day. The CCA Carnival was held today and I must admit, I’ve made the right choice by coming to NJC.

The Genshiken booth. Mikuru figure is there if you can spot it.
That’s right! One CCA which particularly caught my attention was Genshiken! You can’t imagine how excited I was when I saw that. It seems that I don’t have to search high and low for fellow otakus in NJC now; They’re all right there waiting for me to join them. This club was formed this year and currently, it only consists of 6 members, who are also the founding members. Ignited by the otaku flame of passion within them, they decided to start up a ‘brigade’ from scratch just like what Haruhi did. Since this is a new club, I do have my own doubts and uncertainties but well, I guess I must give my support to them as a fellow otaku.
Some of the members were cosplaying in order to attract more attention. The red guy below was cosplaying as someone from Flame of Recca. He was there at {Spark} EOY’07 -Anime @ Expo-, though I’ve no recollection of him. There was also another member cosplaying as Suzumiya Haruhi, and another one in gothic lolita fashion. I’m not so sure about the latter though.

Basically, the members in this club will watch animes and write reviews on them. (Kinda like what Random Curiosity and zeNIME are doing currently.) Whether the reviews are going to be written on an exclusive NJC anime blog or on a club book, I’m not very sure. Also, I’m not sure where we’ll get our source of animes from. I hope it’s not from some bad subs company.
In addition to just watching animes, we’ll also be receiving manga drawing lessons from an external instructor. This is the segment which I’m looking forward to the most. Once I acquire the skills to draw beautiful manga characters, the first thing I’ll do is to create a mascot character for Lustrous Realm! Yay!
Other than that, we’ll also be cosplaying but that’s fully optional. Occasionally, we’ll also attend some cosplay or other anime-related events in Singapore together as a club. That’ll most certainly be fun and exciting!
If you’re in JC1 at NJC this year, and you’re currently reading this post, I hope to see you soon in Genshiken!
P.S. Wonder if they’ll accept me since I never watch Genshiken… I guess I should start watching it now…

Hello hello, I’m in JC1 at NJC this year too! It was so hard to find people who watched the same series as me in my previous school that I positively screamed when I saw the Kurosaki Ichigo painting + Shakugan episode + other figurines which I recognized but forgot. :D So yup, I’m most likely going to join Genshiken too. I’m not really sure about the reviewing part, however. :/ Ah well, see how it goes. Can’t believe I missed seeing Haruhi though!! orz
tt’s it, u’re linked.
n no, genshiken’s just a name we picked, u dun haf to noe e anime backwards to join.
srry for e repeated posting, but wat’s yr name?
Bleag, please, I haven’t watched Genshiken myself. And I’m 1 of the 6 core members. (I’m that Goth-Loli, btw. XD) Already saw your name on my fren’s blog, so I’ll keep an out for you at our next CCA session. Enjoy what’s left of your orientation!
Heys thanks for the enthusiasm! Most definitely what Piaroh and Era said, you don’t need to know Genshiken through and through to join us. What’s most important is the otaku spirit in you! Like Era, i haven’t watched anime yet i’m also one of the six. (the one in the ainu costume in your photos) Let me know your name through email and we’ll be sure to contact you. ^^
Just like what the few said you do not need to watch genshiken to join. I am the one who came up with the name btw. Oh and i’m the red guy.
Dear Alvin,
Ignore the previous post. That was my sister posting in my place. ow here’s my post, from the bottom of my heart:
I sincerely hope you can stay in NJC. From your blog, I can tell that you’re an experienced otaku. You, my friend are the exact type of person I set up the Genshiken to meet: a true otaku. Not the type who watches naught but Narutard and Bleach and claims they’re otaku, but the type who scours the country for anything otaku-related.
You see, my friend, I believe that among the modern forms of entertainment, Japanese anime and manga are the best, and that the otaku lifestyle is truly the best lifestyle there is. In that, Genshiken serves to justify that all I do is for the greater good of otakus. Normal humans I meet are boring! I want to meet more otakus! (actually derived from haruhi) Real, proper, well-bred otakus who watch stuff other than over-hyped anime that span over 100 episodes in length!
Therefore, for your sake and mine, I hope to see you in NJC even after 3 weeks. Welcome, my friend, to the NJC Genshiken. I hope you will enjoy every moment you spend in it, for that is why it exists. And who knows? Maybe you’ll lead it to even greater heights! Here’s hoping; I’ll be observing (wink).
Your sincerely,
Yamibakeru
Yamibakeru > What do you know about experienced otakus anyway…
Lol, thats great that you found a “Genshiken club” to join. Maybe you could make AnimeSugoi a mascot with your awesome drawing skills lol, j/k ^^.
Wow…a Genshiken club just like in the anime/manga. Wish my school had that kind of club…
"Why does he always say things which make people misunderstand! That idiot."

Hum I don’t think it’s obligatory to watch Genshiken in order to join this type of club ^^ because it seems this group already has some goals to do stuff but in the Genshiken they barely do anything only later in the series, I won’t say more about Genshiken cause I leaving you to find out more about it ^^, it’s a great series which I enjoyed very much.
