Naruto 397 - So Itachi is actually a good guy all along!!!
Summary
The chapter begins by showing a black substance coming out of Sasuke’s left eye and before he knew it, Tobi was covered by the flames of Amaterasu.
Sasuke felt pain in his left eye and was wondering what the hell was that. Tobi then answered that that was the Amaterasu that Itachi implanted into him. Tobi then continued by saying that Itachi did this in order to kill him or to keep Sasuke away from him. He set things up so that once Sasuke sees Tobi’s Sharingan, the Amaterasu would automatically be triggered.
However, since Tobi has kept a few secrets from Itachi, he had escaped death this time round. Tobi told Sasuke that when Itachi flicked his forehead before he fell down to the ground, he actually transferred all his eye techniques to him in order to protect him.
Sasuke thought that that was funny and warned that he would kill him if he continued. Tobi then told him that Sasuke knew so much about his brother, yet he knew nothing at all. He continued by saying that it was him, Uchiha Madara, who helped Itachi that night when he killed the rest of the Uchiha clan members.
Tobi then told Sasuke that it was his mission to question him, and that he has to know about Uchiha Itachi, the man who risked everything to protect the ninja world, Leaf Village, and most importantly of all, his little brother, Uchiha Sasuke.

Personal Opinions
Wow! What a good plot twist which have been absent from Naruto for quite a period of time. The Itachi whom we’ve always thought to be a big bad baddie is actually a good guy all along. I suppose all Itachi fangirls must be celebrating with champagne and pizzas now? Although I’m not one, I must admit that I do love this twist pretty much.
Especially that last sentence… It just captured my heart totally. “The man who risked everything to protect the ninja world, Leaf Village, and most importantly of all, his little brother, Uchiha Sasuke.”
What an awesome description for Itachi. I doubt anyone would disagree with me on this. I would certainly love to see how he could have protected Sasuke by killing his clan members. Still, the scene which I’m looking forward to the most is Sasuke’s reaction when he finds out that Itachi had been protecting him all along. He would then bear deep hatred towards Tobi and we can expect an epic battle between them. Also, why did Itachi want to kill Madara that badly?

I was hoping this would happen. Since Naruto 396, I’ve been watching the Naruto animes that had Itachi in them. For being a big bad baddie, he went a little out of his way not to kill his enemies. It “seemed” that he wanted to kill them, but he didn’t. Actually, outside of his own clan, that people believed he killed, did we ever see him kill anyone? I don’t recall. I can’t wait to read about the real Itachi.
I’m not too thrilled with this idea. The idea that Itachi was a psycho behind that cool exterior was actually one of the few times I felt Kishi had thought of the box, and not foreshadowed what was to come. To have him be “good” all along, just plays to the huge Itachi fanbase that seems to exist (based on the internet). Having said that I’m going to assume that Itachi was dying when he fought Sasuke (perhaps due to Tobi/Madara) and knew it and was just blowing time through that whole fight with his brother, knowing what was going to happen.

This whole chapter just shocked me. It was one shock after another, but I’m happy to know that Itachi is really a nice guy after all and I’m sure the next chapter reveal even more good things about him, and we may finally learn about the real Itachi Uchiha ^^
Not expected, especially with Itachi wanting to take Sasuke’s eyes lol. I was shocked when I saw amaterasu, thats pretty interesting that Itachi was able to do that.
awww iiiitacccchi’s…. a…. ggooooodd… guyyyy…. soooo…. ggayyyyyyyy. That ruined Naruto for me. First Itachi dies the gayest death of all time after the biggest plot build-up of all time (he should have taken a Chidori to the chest like Haku) and now they’ve killed his badass image. Fuck you, Naruto. I hope Itachi’s “good guy” story doesn’t further damage his awesomeness. And furthermore, the only reasons left for reading Naruto are to see what Sasuke does next and to see what Pain’s up to (he should revive Jiraiya as a Pain imo).
Well you really cant be to surprised. no, i didnt know this was going to happen, but there actually were alot of signs right in our faces. with the shisui uchiha case, it never showed him killing him, just implied. and, when itachi and kakashi fought while kisame and gai fought, he could have easily murdered kakashi, but did not simply saying ” i do not want to use my best jutsu, because it will attract the attention of nearby jounin”- meaning that he did not want to kill a large amount of people.
i was just thinking that itachi killed his clan because they all want to kill them (sasuke & itachi) because that itachi’s behaviour was getting strange and not behaving porperly at the orders, so when he knew about it he might acted before sasuke’s life get in danger.
@Phoenix - This ruined Naruto for you? That just doesn’t make much sense. Naruto is full of stuff like this. How many times have we read about a “bad” guy, we get their background story, which showed us they were victims of their surroundings, real sorry for them, and then they either die or become good guys themselves? It’s freaking countless! If Naruto didn’t ruin for you all those other times, then you should be still fine now.
Party now!!!!……Itachi is a good guy, cudnt be more happy now even though jiraiya will die or got beaten lol….i think now madara will have itachi revive through pein’s ability but maybe with a condition that sasuke should join akatsuki, and sasuke will join of course after hearing that his big bro was a nice guy. It will be another reason for naruto to become more stronger to take away sasuke from the akatsuki grips.

I dont think the word “Good” applies to Itachi. I would rather think that he gave Sasuke his power to use Amaterasu against Akatsuki cause of Uchiha clan pride.

@jgusw, it was the fact that itachi was implied to be some type of “ultimate bad-ass” for at least 350 chapters. if it was some random ninja, i wouldn’t care, but that Sasuke/Itachi fight took both real life and anime years of buildup to just be negated like itachi’s some victim of circumstances. he’s not gaara, he’s not neji, he was supposed to be bad because of his own idealogy.
If you go back to when sasuke came back from training and found all the uchiha dead.Not a single scene will you find itachi killing clan members.Only when he mangekyo-ed sasuke it gave him the images that he did.When he fought sasuke,or rather when he OWNED sasuke back at the hotel when they were after naruto.. he still kept psychoing him to become stronger so he could kill him
and also when he fought kakashi, kurenai, that smoking guy and gai sensei. he could have just burned them all to bits with amaterasu. but he didnt. so how did he give the impression he was a merciless killer all the while when he was merciful as much as we know it…

There could be half-truths here. The immediate question is not “What is the truth behind Itachi?” but really, “Is what Madara saying about Itachi actually true?”. After all, this is coming from the mouth of the King who has played the Jester all this time…
Honestly, I’m doubting that you must actually kill your best friend to activate Mangekyou. It’s more likely seeing them die in opinion that sets the effect off, at least in my theory. Anyways, I don’t quite trust anything Madara has to say. I hope Sasuke doesn’t believe Madara either and ally himself with Madara/Akatsuki.

how how. It’s pretty obvious that Itachi wanted Sasuke to become stronger so that Sasuke could be able to face up to Madara, not to himself. Itachi’s real goal must have always been to empower Sasuke to defeat Madara. Itachi could have Akatsuki only so that he could keep a sharingan eye on Madara. Itachi simply wasn’t strong enough to fight Madara so he tried to manipulate Sasuke’s destiny, even killing their whole clan in an effort to implant in his younger brother strength through a vengeful will (there must have been no more efficient way). hmm… just IMO….
it seems Madara saw through all of Itachi’s plans though..
remember, Madara acknowledges time and again that Sasuke’s eyes will surpass that of his older brother’s. IMO, even Madara’s.
Madara wants Sasuke’s eyes. Itachi knows this and he devised a plan to make Sasuke sronger and protect him from Madara’s greed for power.

hey i think this confesion will lead to something bad,the point of beating itachi was to revenge and maybe go home after that but now sasuke will be manipulated by madara in someway by this confesion because remember madara is bad,he didnt spill still all the truth out there still some questions.im waiting 401.to know more,this manga is actually good and can even be make to a best seller-book.

I dont know. I mean I kinda got the suspision that Itachi never explained the whole reasons for killing his clan. “To test his powers” never made since. Why not the hokage or the sanine (Jiriyah, Tsunade, Orochimaru.) or the Akutski (or whatever)? Im not saying the Harry Potter reference is a bad example. Im just saying in almost any fiction, there’s more of a backstory that meets the eye with characters like Itachi or Professor Snape. Plus they’re ninjas, not wizards….
